Behind a picture (4): Glenda and Emilio

Most of the time, there is no great technical skill or breathtaking scenery. In some cases the value of the image is simply in the story, and having gained the trust of the owner of the story / Harrisonburg, Virginia, July 2017 / Glenda and Emilio are from El Salvador, more precisely from San Miguel. When he was only 15 years old, Emilio fled from the poverty that struck his country. That was 30 years ago. On hiw own, he started off towards the United States. After the coyotes crossed him, he was received by relatives who had already made the same hard journey. Then, the usual story: work any job, wait a long time, present papers and celebrate the residence that allows you to leave, return to your native country and re-enter without problems. In the case of Emilio, there were 16 years of waiting. Glenda has been in the United States for two years, since Emilio, her childhood neighbor, proposed her on one of his sporadic visits to El Salvador. Now both of them work in a pork BBQ restaurant. Behind a picture (3): The Farm

Most of the time, there is no great technical skill or breathtaking scenery. In some cases the value of the image is simply in the story, and having gained the trust of the owner of the story / Warrens Mill, Pennsylvania, July, 2017 / A farm and two portraits. The first one is John, the labourer and guardian of everything out there. The first thing I did was to take a picture without him. I made the lighting adjustments, I composed and took a picture, then I looked at it in the camera screen to figure out where I could locate our model. Then I approached John and showed him the photo. «What do you think?» I asked him. John, despite being a rough guy, looked at it with curiosity and detail. He said he liked black and white. «It’s true, it’s nice,» I said, and added, «But it would be nicer if someone stood in the picture, would you like to pose for me?» John, proud of the offer, accepted. The image worked because of the position of the person, his posture and the way he looks at the camera, which forces the viewer to begin to look around …

An entire day of bicycle could not have such a boring ending! We deserved more. We put on our best clothes and we went to the village bar. That meant, across the street. The entrance was scary: a long dark hallway and at the end a large lounge, a pool table and a smokey room. We hesitated a moment but finally we took courage and with a steady walk we faced the surprised looks of the locals. In fact, the bartender, Stan, was scary: tattooed, big and serious. American, born in Taiwan because of the military destiny of his father.
